Fearful Of Your Next Panic Attack?
We see individuals who struggle with the sudden onset of intense worry. This worry is often accompanied by overwhelming physiological sensations like: racing heart rate, shortness of breath, hyperventilating, sweating, tunnel vision and more. It’s possible these symptoms even lead to disturbing thoughts that you are dying or having a heart attack.
The main issues that clients face coming in with panic attacks are related to the avoidance that can result from experiencing these symptoms. Often people describe increased fear, or debilitating fear, of engaging in activities where they believe a panic attack will occur. The problem is that these are unpredictable experiences and eventually can make one feel that they aren’t able to do anything or “handle” experiences outside of their home.
Therapy for Panic Disorder
Abigail is professionally trained to approach panic disorder therapy with response prevention techniques. She first assists clients with understanding the nature of panic attacks and how they are maintained. If clients meet criteria for panic disorder, we also provide additional psychoeducation so they can better understand how their fear and anxiety is cyclical and reinforced by avoidance behavior.
To quickly help people build tolerance of discomfort, we use exposure therapy first and foremost as the most effective treatment. To help people build a tolerance of these symptoms, we use exposure therapy. This helps clients gradually approach their fears and get back to engaging in activities they care about.
